چکیده
Information retrieval systems are proliferating in biomedical settings, but many problems in indexing, retrieval, and evaluation of systems continue to exist. The SAPHIRE Project was undertaken to seek solutions to these problems. This paper summarizes the evaluation studies that have been done with SAPHIRE, highlighting the lessons learned and laying out the challenges ahead to all medical information retrieval efforts.

Evaluation of SAPHIRE: an automated approach to indexing and retrieving medical literature.
An analysis of SAPHIRE, an experimental information retrieval system featuring automated indexing and natural language retrieval, was performed on MEDLINE references using data previously generated for a MEDLINE evaluation. Compared with searches performed by novice and expert physicians using MEDLINE, SAPHIRE achieved comparable recall and precision. While its combined recall and precision per...
متن کاملSAPHIRE International: a tool for cross-language information retrieval
The world's foremost medical literature is written in English, yet much of the world does not speak English as a primary language. This has led to increasing research interest in cross-language information retrieval, where textual databases are queried in languages other than the one in which they are written. We describe enhancements to the SAPHIRE concept-retrieval system, which maps free-tex...
